Rudy Giuliani, former President Donald Trump‘s personal attorney, insisted that he is “not a Russian agent” and described himself as “the biggest anti-communist you ever met” on Monday.
Giuliani made the remarks during an appearance on the latest edition of Fox News‘ Hannity. The former New York City mayor, a Republican, suggested that the FBI raiding of his Manhattan apartment last week was part of an attempt to “destroy” his reputation due to his investigation of President Joe Biden‘s son Hunter Biden.
Giuliani insisted that it had been his “burden” to defend Trump, who he said was innocent of any crime, while his investigation into Hunter Biden had found that the current president was “one of the biggest criminals in the history of the country.”
“They’ve been trying to make me a Russian agent for about three years,” Giuliani said. “Which is totally nuts. I’m probably the biggest anti-communist you ever met. Uh, there’s no way I’m a Russian agent. Or anybody else’s agent. I was a lawyer who was representing a client who was innocent.”
“The biggest burden a lawyer can have is to represent an innocent man,” he added. “And I did it damn well. And I have exposed that our president is one of the biggest criminals in the history of the country.”
On Saturday, The Washington Post and The New York Times both retracted claims that the FBI had warned Giuliani that he was the target of a Russian disinformation campaign before serving the search warrant, which resulted in several of his electronic devices being confiscated.
The reports were both based on anonymous sources. Giuliani has demanded that the papers reveal their sources, saying that their original reports were based on lies that “targeted an American Citizen.”
Giuliani has claimed to possess hard drives that had allegedly been owned by Hunter Biden. Giuliani says the hard drives contain proof of multiple illegal activities by the president’s son, including failure to register as a foreign agent. He complained that the hard drives purportedly owned by the president’s son were the only ones not taken by the FBI during last week’s raid.
Giuliani and the Trump re-election campaign sought to discredit Joe Biden by claiming that the hard drive contained evidence of Hunter Biden using his father’s status as vice president to leverage business deals. On April 8, Hunter Biden called the probe into the hard drives a “red herring.”
“It is absolutely a red herring,” Hunter Biden said. “I’m absolutely I think within my rights to question anything that comes from the desk of Rudy Giuliani.”
Hunter Biden is under a tax investigation by the FBI and IRS probing his foreign business dealings, particularly those in China.
