The Lake County coroner said Wednesday that she has asked legal and professional authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding a Volo man who died after experiencing complications during dental surgery.

Corey Causey, 51, died in Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville on June 10, the day after he had gone to a Gurnee oral surgeon to have five teeth extracted. During the dental procedure, Causey experienced complications that Coroner Jennifer Banek said were caused by improper anesthesia administration.

Banek said the she felt the circumstances of Causey’s death were serious enough she has asked the state’s attorney’s office to investigate. Banek also said she sent a certified letter to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation asking the agency to temporarily bar the oral surgeon, Dr. Aaron Cwik, from administering anesthesia, pending the outcome of a complaint Banek filed.

An autopsy performed on Causey listed his cause of death as “probable complications of Propofol administration during a dental procedure,” compounded by underlying health conditions.

Attempts to reach Cwik for comment Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Banek said Causey was given far too great an amount of Propofol given his health concerns, which included cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and sleep apnea, and that the oral surgeon failed to properly monitor Causey during the surgery at Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons of Lake County, which is located in Gurnee.

Causey, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, had come to the oral surgeon on June 9
